<h2>
IGW 2014 - Interview and Video</h2>
<div>
<div>
Interview - IGW Founder Mike Cook</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Today marks the release of the IGW2014 movie. International GoWorld Weekend movies have become a great benchmark in adventure films and we here at Human Spirit of Adventure are fortunate enough to score an interview with IGW's founder Mike Cook.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Mike is an adventurer/filmmaker out of Colorado who we at HSA consider ourselves lucky enough to have developed a friendship with over the last several years... Read the interview and see the new trailer below..</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Interview</b></div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
<div>
1.<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span><i>Tell us, how the IGW has grown since 2013?</i> Wow… where to begin? As far as numbers go our Facebook following has gained 5,000+ fans in the last 6 months or so. GWP videos collectively have been viewed 200,000 times and we have also bolstered our overall number of GWP members (“member” meaning someone who contributes content to any of our many ‘projects”) to over 500 from over 50 countries… that’s 1/3 of the world’s countries! It blows my mind every time to think of that. We did a fraction of the promotion for IGW2014 that we did for IGW2013 and the number of contributors still grew! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
2.<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span><i>When is the IGW2014 film set to debut?</i> IGW2014 releases Tuesday July 15 on YouTube. Additionally, in an effort to ensure future sustainability of GWP we are releasing an extended paid version in the form of an instant download for only $2.99. Downloads include the movie and IGW2014 soundtrack in the form of multiple mp3’s. And as I try to do a little marketing here… You can preorder your copy of IGW2014 and get free additional GWP videos! (You can purchase your extended copy of IGW2014 here: http://goworldproject.com/projects/international-gopro-weekend/)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
3.<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span><i>What was the response to the 2013 IGW film?</i> It was amazing, as I know many fans told me that the production value as well as the movie itself exceeded their expectations. It’s biased, but I thought the IGW2013 movie came out awesome. And it moves me every time I watch it. Each year as GWP grows and grows and as I refine my skills more and more my videos become better and better. GoPro was also really awesome and they promoted the video on their Facebook page. I think within the first week of its release the video had been viewed 9,000+ times, and in the following 10-11 months it has been viewed and additional 6,000 times bring the total to just about 15,000. Additionally IGW2013 had been embedded on many notable websites like ThreeSixFive and Outside TV. To give you a sense of the growth in 2013 the IGW2012 movie has been viewed about 1,200 times.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
4.<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span><i>Any particular adventure sport athletes we should keep an eye out for in this film?</i> A few, yes. First off, check out Tory Grant. He is a skateboarder, and a good one at that! Tory has been a contributor to GWP since day-one and has been a part of all three IGW events. He’s young, he’s skilled, and he’s driven… all key ingredients to live a successful life as a professional athlete. He is already sponsored by Sketch Skateboards and currently accepted an offer for a sponsorship by us (GoWorld Project). Tory is a great person and very fun and inspiring to be around. He’s got a bright future ahead of him! The second bright star is Rob Pelon. Rob is a BASE jumper/wingsuit flyer and is very skilled at what he does. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Rob on the business front and I can say that he is a very good person with a great personality. Kind, patient, and wholesome, he too has a bright future ahead of him. He is wise beyond his years and has a lot to offer in all facets of his life.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
5.<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span><i>What is your favorite sequence in the 2014 film?</i> In the extended version: My favorite sequence would be the final sequence. It incorporates a lot of the most compelling and engaging content as well as my most favorite song. The pace is fast, the sequence is engaging, and it invokes the most powerful emotions of all sequences for me personally. I know that preferences are subjective and vary greatly across the board, but I do feel that on some level all viewers will appreciate the final sequence. Free version: Part 2 - Sebastien Barrier edited that sequence and Seb always has a propensity to outshine me… but that’s exactly what I love about him and why I have him team up with me to take on the editing. His editing skills encourage me to raise my bar. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
6.<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span><i>What else is on tap in 2014?</i> I’ve started promotion for Far Side Project 2014. People can still contribute footage up unto August 1 (contribute: <a href="http://goworldproject.com/projects/far-side-project/">http://goworldproject.com/projects/far-side-project/</a>) . Additionally I have been working on our new Project “#TorySkatesCO”, an ongoing skateboarding series featuring our sponsored athlete Tory Grant. We flew Tory out to Colorado where he and I did a 4-day skating adventure through all of the top skate parks in CO. It was unbelievably fun and we captured a lot of great content that I will be turning into a 4 or 5 part series later this summer or fall. So be on the look out for that (<a href="http://goworldproject.com/discover/toryskatesco/">http://goworldproject.com/discover/toryskatesco/</a>). And while I’m on the topic of sponsorships I will say that I will soon be opening up the door to everyone who is interested in obtaining a sponsorship from GoWorld Project! I’m looking for skilled and driven athletes, musicians, and entrepreneurs. So if you fit that category make sure and seek me out! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I will also be doing another round of IGS Montage with Sketch Skateboards starting next month, so I’m really excited about that as we are expanding the Project’s theme to encompass all things with wheels and not just skateboards. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Lastly I am working on creating a digital publication for GoWorld Project… so like an online magazine that people could subscribe to. It’s still very early with that and I’m not %100 certain it will come to fruition, but don’t be surprised if late this year you see GWP Magazine! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
7.<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span><i>Would you like to give any shout outs?</i> Oh yeah… All of the GWP members, everyone who contributed content for IGW2014, Sebastien Barrier, Rob Pelon, Tory Grant, Sketch Skateboards, The Bitches (I love the Bitches), Dankys, Dedrex, Envoy, Driven Retro, Nit Grit, GoPro, and everyone who has ever been inspired by GWP or who has been moved in a positive way by it. I hope you guys are ready for IGW2014, because The World Is Yours…</div>
<div>

Mount Kilimanjaro, is by no way as high as some of the 8,000 metre behemoths in
the Himalayas. However, unlike its larger cousins in Asia, Kilimanjaro is the
tallest free-standing mountain in the world. By free standing I mean it stands
alone and is not part of a mountain range. Typically these types of mountains
are volcanoes, which brings me onto my second point</span></div>

volcano comprised of three volcanic cones or vents – Shira (the oldest), Kibo

last major eruption from Kibo occurred 360,000 years ago. The most recent
volcanic activity happened 200 years ago and resulted in today’s ash pit, which
is visible from Uhuru Peak – the summit of Kilimanjaro</span></div>

Kilimanjaro has lost 82% of its ice cap and since 1962 it has lost 55% of its

the glaciers on Kilimanjaro could vanish altogether</span></div>

climbers on all routes on average reach Uhuru Peak. But don’t let low success
rates deter you; even 85 year olds can climb the Roof of Africa!</span></div>

September 2012 aged 85 and 84 respectively. Esther overtook previous record

Martin’s achievement narrowly pipped Richard Byerley who managed to climb the
Roof of Africa in October 2011 at the age of 84 years and 71 days. However, if
you think that is impressive then prepare yourself for the next fact</span></div>

Kilimanjaro and reaching the summit in 4-5 days is a gruelling feat. However
there are some people who have extra special powers. For Kilian Jornet,
Kilimanjaro proved to be a walk in the park (excuse the pun). In September
2010, the Spanish mountain runner reached the summit in the record time of 5
hours, 23 minutes and 50 seconds - beating the previous record held by Kazak
mountain runner, Andrew Puchinin, by one minute. He then ran down the mountain to
base camp reaching it in a total time (up and down the mountain) of 6 hours 29

Esther and Kilian, and who knows this just might be you!</span></div>

<h3>
HSA Challenge 2014...</h3>
<div>
It's time for the HSA Challenge 2014!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We introduced this concept in 2013 here on our blog with less success than we'd anticipated. But like all adventurers, we don't give up so easily</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It's a new year and time to renew the challenge.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
What is the HSA Challenge you ask? Well, simply put, we challenge you, our readers and fans, to add some adventure to your lives and document it for the world to see. Here is the concept...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Pick at least one day each week to do something adventurous</div>
<div>
Document the adventure with photos or video</div>
<div>
Share the adventure with us on our Facebook page (<a href="http://www.facebook.com/Humanspiritofadventure">www.facebook.com/Humanspiritofadventure</a>)</div>
<div>
And (most important of all)... HAVE FUN</div>
<div>
That all there is to it...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Pics do not have to be professional quality... they can be shot with a cell phone in the crappiest conditions. Vids don't have to be professionally shot or edited... this is NOT an editing contest.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This is about human beings breaking away from self-imposed bondage and servitude by injecting fun and adventure into their lives. It's about rekindling that spark down deep within all of us. It's about showing the world that the human spirit is still alive.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

The North Face- The Explorer... narrated by Dr. Buzz Aldrin</h3>
<div>
As adventurers, we all dream of exploring the unknown... or at least challenging ourselves to do the hard stuff. We long to test ourselves in adverse conditions, doing the improbable just for the sake of doing it. Exploration has always been at the center of the human spirit.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="http://www.thenorthface.com/" target="_blank">The North Face</a> has put out a little video, narrated by Space Hero Dr. Buzz Aldrin that sums up what exploration is all about. Check it out, then get out there!</div>

Raw POV Footage of Jeb Corliss Flying Dagger Stunt...</h3>
<div>
<a href="http://humanspiritofadventure.blogspot.com/2013/09/video-wingsuit-pilot-jeb-corliss-lands.html" target="_blank">In September, we (as well as a thousand other media outlets) reported </a>on wingsuit pilot Jeb Corliss, the 37 year old adventurer as he flew through the crack in Langshan Mountain, in Zhejiang Province, China, to complete the "flying dagger" jump.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you have ever wondered what that might have looked like through Jeb's eyes, you can check out the raw footage video from his wrist cam below...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The fissure is only about 25 feet across between a 900-foot-tall column of rock. After the jump, Corliss stated, "This is the greatest thing I've ever done up to this point. I am just so, so happy that we were able to do it,"</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Check out the video... you can hear the roar as Jeb cuts through the wind, hear the solitude as his chute opens, and hear the elation as he makes his landing. This is great stuff!</div>

<h3>
How To Make A Survival Bracelet...</h3>
<div>
We've all seen them. Those survival bracelets made from 550 parachute cord. Bear Grylls (as far as I can tell) brought on their popularity among adventurers and it has since become a fashion statement.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I wear one everyday.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I have heard a lot of fellow adventurers say that it's a waste, there's not enough cord there to matter, and various other negative statements about them. I have no idea why some people think that way. In a real survival situation, any resource is a good resource. Why wouldn't you want one?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Eight ot ten feet of 550 cord can serve plenty of purposes when the chips are down. You can use them to help lash a shelter, mark a trail, or hang your food. You can use the strands inside for fishing line, sewing thread, snares, and even dental floss.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In my mind, even if it's trendy, you shouldn't leave home without one. I subscribe to the old survivalists theory of "It's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it".</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So that poses the next two questions... "How do I make one?" and "Why make one when they are so cheap to buy?"</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Let me answer these in reverse order. As to why you would want to make one... you might use the one you wear while you are on the trail and need to make another when you get back to base camp and your big roll of 550 cord.</div>
<div>
As to how to make one... well Heritage Pride Firearms made a very detailed video on the subject... check it out below. Then make one for yourself...</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ0mVd7PvDyC5saqbPx2DT5gpQYxHa6z9qYf9oloLRvCA7Icy33-U7TulgR3gzE5YQjKLTWEHSa2yg76Oly8D5OGaOgL8tRBLpvUxMG2W0SHmRArhmHGP7uLA_7atSEsix4I_vEPxUnWpo/s1600/Triton.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ0mVd7PvDyC5saqbPx2DT5gpQYxHa6z9qYf9oloLRvCA7Icy33-U7TulgR3gzE5YQjKLTWEHSa2yg76Oly8D5OGaOgL8tRBLpvUxMG2W0SHmRArhmHGP7uLA_7atSEsix4I_vEPxUnWpo/s1600/Triton.jpg" height="192" width="320" /></a></div>
<h3>
Triton Oxygen Rebreather: Will It Work?</h3>
<div>
For SCUBA divers, this could be a dream come true (if it ever actually comes true). </div>
<div>
Straight out of a science fiction film, or perhaps a James Bond film, a South Korean designer claims to have invented an oxygen mask which can draw air from water as you swim, eliminating the need for air tanks and bulky SCUBA equipment.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The <a href="http://www.yankodesign.com/2014/01/03/scuba-breath/" target="_blank">Triton</a> acts like a fish gill to extract oxygen from water so that the user can keep breathing while under the sea. Designer Jeabyun Yeon, who came up with the concept, believes it will change the way people approach water. This concept relies on some future technologies that have not yet been invented, such as a micro-battery and a few other things.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The regulator comprises a plastic mouthpiece that requires you to simply bite down. There are two arms that branch out to the sides of the scuba mask that have been developed to function like the efficient gills of a marine creature. The scaly texture conceals small holes in the material where water is sucked into Jeabyun Yeon's Triton. Chambers inside separate the oxygen and release the liquid so that you can breath comfortably in the ocean.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The design has its nay-sayers though. Dr. Alistair Dove, Director of Research and Conservation at Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, <a href="http://deepseanews.com/2014/01/triton-not-dive-or-dive-not-there-is-no-triton/" target="_blank">wrote a piece for Deepseanews.com</a> where he breaks down the physics of breathing.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The Triton is a very cool concept that has been on the minds of divers for generations. Considering I have extremely limited knowledge of SCUBA diving, I have no experience in which to form an opinion. However, all scientific discoveries and inventions were once thought to be impossible.</div>
<div>

Will it work? Leave us a comment to tell us what you think.</div>

<h3>
Is This The Longest Wave Ever Ridden In Lagos, Algarve?</h3>
<div>
As Winter Storm Hercules ripped through the Northern Hemisphere, surfers from all over the world tried their chops on the beastly waves... most unsuccessfully. But in Portugal, one man was able to get a great ride that lasted for 100 seconds.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
Alex Botelho paddled out at Batata Beach and paddled into a wave. He then stayed on it for an incredible 100 seconds</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In an interview Botelho told Surf Portugal Magazine. “I didn’t expect to surf that wave, I passed by a friend that was surfing in the river, passed the pier, and suddenly I was in Meia Praia.”</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Non surfers do not realize that most waves last on 6 to 10 seconds. A 100 second wave is quite rare. Less than a handful of places can a ride be found that long. Texas Tanker Surfing has boasted waves that can go for 20 minutes, but the circumstances are unique.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<h3>
Telemark Skiing - Are You Up For It?</h3>
<div>
With January upon us and February around the corner, we here in the Northern Hemisphere enter the height of ski season.</div>
<div>
Skiing has long been a great adventure sport, turned extreme sport for those who live in mountainous, snow-covered terrain. The Olympic Winter Games features skiing as the biggest attraction, along with snow boarding and biathlons. And of course, for those in flatter areas, cross country skiing is quite popular. But one of the more extreme styles of skiing is know as Telemarking. Telemark skiing is quite popular, so much so that there are <a href="http://www.telemarkskiermagazine.com/" target="_blank">magazines</a> and <a href="http://www.telemarknato.com/" target="_blank">organizations</a> dedicated to the sport. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What is telemarking you ask?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
Telemark skiing, also known as "free heel skiing", is a form of downhill skiing using bindings where the boot is attached only at the toe (similar to those of Cross-country skiing), allowing the heel to come up from the ski. Because the heel is free, it allows the skier to go into a lunge position in order to turn. The act of lunging while turning is a technique called the telemark turn.</div>
<div>
Telemark turns are led with the heel flat on the outside ski (which becomes the downhill ski at the end of the turn) with the knee at a 90-degree angle. The inside ski slides back under the skier's body with a flexed knee and raised heel. This position resembles that of a lunge. The skis are staggered but not quite parallel, and the downhill ski is pushed forward by the skier’s lunge. Normally the 50% to 60% of the body weight is distributed on the outside ski, depending on snow conditions.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Telemark turns are rounder and more graceful than alpine turns. They are also much more strenuous, so expect your quads to burn afterward — though, compared to downhill, Telemark skiing is considerably easier on the knees. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Equipment for telemark skiing differs from traditional alpine skiing as unlike alpine ski bindings, which lock the heel and toe of the boot, Telemark skis only lock in the toe and leave the heel detached; for this reason, Telemark technique is sometimes referred to as ‘free-heel skiing’. Traditionally, the bindings are different as well. Older telemark bindings used a ‘three-pin’ system that locked the duckbill in place but for the last 30 years or so, spring-loaded cable bindings have been the most widely used models.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The next, and possibly largest difference, as explained above, is the telemark turn. Making a proper Telemark turn generally requires a lot of practice and beginners should first learn the skill on relatively flat terrain.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here is a video to help you learn the basics of a Telemark turn. So sit back, watch, and enjoy. The get out there and give it a shot if you are up for it.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<h3>
Geocaching - Fun Micro Adventures...</h3>
<div>
So you are dying for an adventure, but you are short on time and/or money. Maybe it's just not possible for you to get away for the weekend, but you have several hours you can burn. Maybe you should try <a href="http://www.geocaching.com/" target="_blank">geocaching</a>.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What is this crazy phenomena know as geocaching, you ask? Well simply put, <a href="http://www.geocaching.com/" target="_blank">Geocaching</a> is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. It's kind of like land navigation meets treasure hunting meets hiking, biking, or skiing. It can be a lot of fun for you, or your family. In fact, there is an entire world-wide community of geocachers out there.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
A geocache, in its simplest form, always contains a logbook for you to log your find. Larger caches may contain a logbook and any number of items. These items turn the adventure into a true treasure hunt. You never know what the cache owner or visitors to the cache may have left for you to enjoy, if you take something, leave something of equal or greater value in return. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Pretty simple huh? If you are interested in <a href="http://www.geocaching.com/" target="_blank">Geocaching</a> and want to become part of a world-wide community of adventurers, then check out <a href="http://www.geocaching.com/">http://www.geocaching.com/</a> for more details, instruction, sign up, and everything else you need to know.</div>

<h3>
Campfire Cooking: Rock Chicken Recipe...</h3>
<div>
One of the best things about being in the wilderness, in my opinion, is eating a tasty meal around the campfire. Maybe it's the feeling of being primitive, or the open air, or maybe even a little dirt that always seems to find its way into the food, but for some reason food just tastes better in the bush.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
One of my favorites is "Rock Chicken". it is a great meal when prepared properly. The use of hot rocks allows the chicken to roast slowly and the meat is quite tender and succulent. In cold weather, you can even prepare it and toss it into your backpack and it will help keep you warm on your trek... a warning for this though, DO NOT carry it in your backpack in areas frequented by bears!!! The last thing you need is to get mauled by a bear while hiking through the woods.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here is my recipe for Rock Chicken...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
It is an easy recipe that you can start and forget about for several hours. Here’s how it’s done, and yes, it’s primitive cooking.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
1. Find three good-sized rocks about the size of softball, and place them in the campfire to get hot. Sometimes you get a rock that will crack when heated so it is wise to place a couple of extras in to heat, just in case. The rocks have to get very, very hot.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
2. While the rocks are getting hot take a whole chicken and clean inside and out, then rub it down with salt, pepper, and other spices to taste. Stuff 2 whole celery sticks and 1 whole onion into the chicken.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
3. After the rocks are HOT, stuff one of the rocks into the chicken with the celery and onion. Place the chicken on a large sheet of tinfoil and take the other two rocks and place one under each wing.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
4. Now wrap the chicken in several layers of tinfoil. If you don't use enough foil the rocks may burn through and you will lose too much heat to cook the bird.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
5. Then take wet newspaper and wrap it around the tinfoil. Also make sure you wrap at least 10 to 20 layers of newspaper around it, the more the merrier. This will hold the heat of the rocks in extremely well.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
6. Let the chicken cook. The heat of the rocks will cook the chicken in about 3 to 5 hours.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
NOTE: it might be best to try this recipe at home before going into the wilderness... you want to make sure you have it right.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We hope you enjoy it!</div>

<h3>
QUESTION: HOW DO YOU MAKE A LIVING FROM ADVENTURE?</h3>
<div>
From time to time I have received emails asking how to make a living as an adventurer. That is quite a question considering that I do not. Adventure and adventure sports are, for me, a pleasant past time that I use to find self-fulfillment and enlightenment... not to mention the down-right thrill. My guess is that, because I write an adventure blog, some people think that I must be making a living from it. Not true... I work a daily grind just like most people.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In all honesty and fairness, it is true that I would love to make my passion for adventure into a profitable career, at this point, I haven't.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So in an answer to the emails, I did some research on professional adventurers and found that most of them generate their incomes from multiple streams such as writing, speaking, photography, etc. In a perfect world, we would all follow the path of Bear Grylls and have our own TV shows, product lines, and endorsements. But for most the reality is far different.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I found several articles on such questions from several professional adventurers... and let me tell you, it will definitely require sacrifice, hard work, and dedication. </div>

We here at HSA would NEVER try to discourage anyone from following a dream... the truth is that making a living from adventure CAN be done... if you are willing to truly go for it.</div>

HERE'S TO ANOTHER GREAT YEAR!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<h3>
Another Year of Adventure...</h3>
<div>
<div>
My fellow Adventurers,</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As we bring to close another year in the history of our lives, let us not look back and wonder what could have been... but look forward to what will be. We will have plenty of time for looking back when we are old, gray, and reminiscing with grandchildren.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The Human Spirit of Adventure has always been about moving forward and meeting challenges... from the early days when Columbus sailed the Atlantic in search of a new world, to the first moon landing, to Felix Baumgartner's super-sonic Base-jump from the edge of space, adventurers have always followed the road less traveled.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
A wise man once said, "Tomorrow is the first blank page in a 365 page book... Write a good one."</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We here at Human Spirit of Adventure plan to write a great one, and we hope that each and every one of you do as well. May all of your dreams come true in 2014, and may all of your adventures be exciting!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
HAPPY NEW YEAR!</div>

<h3>
Story House Productions is Casting for Reality Adventure Show...</h3>
<div>
From time to time, we here at HSA are sent requests to post casting calls. Most times we don't because things sound a little fishy, or the production company can't be researched, or whatever. Well this time it seems like we were sent a legit request so we will post it here... </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Story House Productions is a television production company based out of Washington D.C. and is casting an adventure show--they are searching for a male duo who will compete in international challenges around the world... Read the call below...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<i> CALLING ALL ADVENTURERS!!!</i></div>
<div>
<i><br /></i></div>
<div>
<i>Are you adventurous? Are you athletic? Do you accept crazy challenges?! If the answer to all three of these questions is, 'HECK YEAH!' then we want to hear from you! </i></div>
<div>
<i><br /></i></div>
<div>
<i>We're looking for unique male duos that love extreme sports, will try anything once, like to crack jokes all day, and have a “balls to the wall” type personality to engage in insane challenges all over the globe.</i></div>
<div>
<i><br /></i></div>
<div>
<i>...you've got to be ATHLETIC enough to compete in life endangering events, FUNNY enough to be a host personality, and last but not least, you need to be HANDSOME men in your late 20’s to early 40’s. That's right good-looking, I'm talking to you!</i></div>
<div>
<i><br /></i></div>
<div>
<i>Please submit if you’re a good-looking dynamic duo--you can be brothers, cousins, or best friends whose personalities compliment each other (and if one is more outgoing and willing to do absolutely anything while the other is more hesitant...perfect!)</i></div>
<div>
<i><br /></i></div>
<div>
<i>You could end up on our new TV series travelling the globe--and you'll have a few bucks in your pocket too! If you can do all of this while having a great sense of humor and a pint or two of booze, please submit to this call by emailing <a href="mailto:castingSHP@gmail.com">castingSHP@gmail.com</a> with pictures of you and your duo, video of the two of you doing something crazy (if possible) and a paragraph statement about your relationship, how you met, and the adventures on which you like to embark.</i></div>
<div>
<i><br /></i></div>
<div>
<i>**You must have a duo in mind to apply. No solo submissions will be accepted.</i></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
<i><br /></i></div>
<div>
<i>--End of Call--</i></div>
<div>
<i><br /></i></div>
<div>
<i><br /></i></div>
<div>
<i>Thanks for your consideration,</i></div>
<div>
<i><br /></i></div>
<div>
<i>Story House Productions</i></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So there you have it... good luck to those who apply!</div>

<h3>
IGW 2014 Is Coming...</h3>
<div>
Time is coming soon for the 3rd annual International GoPro Weekend. Our friends at <a href="http://goworldproject.com/" target="_blank">The Goworld Project</a> are already setting the stage for what is quickly becoming one of the biggest yearly events in adventure sports.<br />
<br />
Read this blurb from their website...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
<b>What is International GoPro Weekend?</b> IGW is an annual 3-day event in which we ask GoPro fanatics from around the world to film something using their GoPros. We then compile the footage they contribute to make a movie that shares our concurrent experiences from this 72 hour window… International GoPro Weekend! For IGW2012 we had 37 people from 14 countries submit content! For IGW2013 we had 127 people from over 40 countries. IGW2014 promises to be even bigger!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>When is International GoPro Weekend?</b> The 3rd annual IGW (aka IGW2014) will be held March 14, 15, and 16. Holding the event over a period of three days gives everyone the flexibility to pick a day to film that’s most convenient for them. However, it is NOT a requirement that your clip be filmed during this period; we just strongly encourage you to film on these three days, so that we can share our concurrent experiences.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>How do I participate? </b>To officially sign up, please send an email request to: IGW2014@GoWorldProject.com. We will respond with more details about the event, specifics about the content desired (resolution, fps, subject nature), general guidelines and how to go about submitting your clip(s) once IGW2014 has taken place. DON'T FORGET... we give out a ton of prizes at random for participation. In years past, we've given out: SD cards, GoPro accessories, stickers, posters, a HERO3 Silver and Black Edition!!! (Shouts out to GoPro for hooking up the cameras and gear!)</div>

<h3>
Christmas Gift Ideas for the Adventurer</h3>
<div>
With Christmas less than 2 weeks away, one question comes to mind... What to get for the adventurer?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There are many, many ideas... from backpacks to ski poles to climbing ropes, but here are a couple of ideas (3 to be exact) that you might not have thought about, with a bit of uniqueness to them.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjznWi-xczb1fVhRPBdFYxeeTRkuesoAkRHI_LmWdnWO4qzTz_y4FtSBEJYzn09f0S2BYFAM6Jv3UiIay79OBWTfKi1_5eEdEx3XlqTyUvV2phX3ujKlCtIEtLHWJ8FDNEiOy3z8uDfp159/s1600/biolite+stove.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjznWi-xczb1fVhRPBdFYxeeTRkuesoAkRHI_LmWdnWO4qzTz_y4FtSBEJYzn09f0S2BYFAM6Jv3UiIay79OBWTfKi1_5eEdEx3XlqTyUvV2phX3ujKlCtIEtLHWJ8FDNEiOy3z8uDfp159/s200/biolite+stove.jpg" height="153" width="200" /></a></div>
<div>
<b>1. Biolite Camp Stove</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
The BioLite Wood Burning CampStove combines the benefits of a lightweight backpacking stove and an off-grid power charger so you can cook a meal while charging your gadgets. The Campstove is the perfect solution for both the backcountry campsite and also Emergency Preparedness Kits.</div>
<div>
No Fuel to Buy or Carry: Our stoves cook your meals with nothing but the twigs you collect on your journey or in your backyard, eliminating the need for heavy, expensive, polluting petroleum gas. Quick to light, fast to boil and easy to use.</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Charge your Gadgets: By converting heat from the fire into usable electricity, our stoves will recharge your phones, lights and other gadgets while you cook dinner. Unlike solar, BioLite CampStove is a true on-demand source.</li>
<li>Stay Green: By using renewable resources for fuel instead of petroleum, you're reducing your carbon footprint. You'll also keep fuel canisters out of the landfill.</li>
<li>Be Prepared: The CampStove isn't just for camping; it's great to have when the power goes out in a storm or other natural disaster. You'll be able to cook and keep electronics charged while power lines are down. No need to worry about your local store being sold out of propane, the CampStove is designed to run on any biomass.</li>
<li>Support a Better World: We're using the same technology inside the CampStove to bring clean, safe energy to families across the developing world.</li>
<li>Have Fun: Like a campfire, you can sit around the CampStove and watch the flames dance as you roast marshmallows and tell stories with friends.</li>
<li>How it Works: Using BioLite's patented thermoelectric technology, the BioLite CampStove converts heat to electricity that powers a fan to make the fire ultra-efficient. Extra electricity can be used to charge small electronics like mobile phones and LED lights.</li>
</ul>

<b>2. Solar Powered Illuminating Bottle</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>

The one-liter, TritanTM, BPA-free plastic bottle is perfect for carrying water, but its wide mouth also makes it an excellent water-tight container for your valuables, and the volume scale printed on the side makes it handy for mixing.</div>
<div>
But the real twist is in the lid: sealed inside the cap are four super-bright LEDs and one red LED (for night vision), along with a reflective lens that turns your plastic bottle into a brilliant camp light.</div>
<div>
It's powered by a small, high efficiency FastSolarTM panel, so there are no batteries needed - ever! Features adjustable wrist or bag strap. Made in China. Available in red or smoke color.</div>

<h3>
Colorado is Adventure Paradise...</h3>
<div>
In our last post,<a href="http://humanspiritofadventure.blogspot.com/2013/11/destination-colorado.html" target="_blank"> Destination: Colorado</a>, my girlfriend, my son, and I embarked upon an extremely long road trip from Corpus Christi to Denver CO.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As with any road trip, it had it's pitfalls. We started out early Saturday morning. Since an arctic front had blown into Texas, we had the rare opportunity to drive South Texas roads that were covered in ice. Originally being from Albuquerque, I was fortunate enough to remember how to drive in these conditions. We drove for 10 arduous hours, not making near the headway that we should have. Ice, holiday traffic, and a 40 MPH headwind slowed us considerably. Around 5:00PM we had to settle in at a cheap hotel in Plainview TX for the night. Rooms were full at all of the better hotels due to the road conditions, so CHEAP was all we could find. I spent most of the night sipping on wine and worrying if I would contract lice and bedbugs...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The next morning we awoke early and got back on the road.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
MORE STORY AND PHOTOS AFTER THE JUMP</div>
<div>
<a name='more'></a>As we wound on down the road, making the distance between Plainview and the New Mexico border at a snails pace, we finally broke free onto clear roads and a chilly 20 degree temperature.</div>
<div>
The rest of the drive was great until we hit Colorado Springs CO, where the snowflakes were falling fast and were as big as leaves on a tree. But finally we made it into Denver where we settled in to our reserved hotel and watched the second half of the Bronco game before retiring for the night.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Monday, my girlfriend and I went grocery shopping early as we were having our Turkey dinner on Tuesday instead of the traditional day. Afterward, she showed me and my son around Denver. We did a lot of window shopping at REI and some local places, looking at adventure gear... I'm sure she wanted to pull me out of those stores before my Christmas wish list became too long.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
On Tuesday we had our feast. Our 1 bedroom suite had a small kitchen with no oven, so my girlfriend, ever the improvising chef, was able to bake 3 pies and all the sides in a turkey roaster, and then the turkey too. I must say that the feast was magnificent!!! Everything turned out perfect and we found a way to seat 9 people in the room for the festivities.</div>
<div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">El Dorado Canyon - Photo HSA</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
Wednesday took us on our first day of outdoor adventure. We made our way from Denver to El Dorado Canyon State Park for a little hiking.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Due to the fall flooding in the area, we were not able to access all of the areas we would have liked. but we still had an excellent day hike and enjoyed the beautiful scenery. Afterward, we made our way up to Boulder Canyon for more hiking and scenery. It was a great day to be in nature as the sun was shining, the air was crisp, and the temperature sat at a nice 35 degrees.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<div>
The following day, which was the traditional Thanksgiving day, we embarked on another great hike at the world famous Red Rocks... This was quite beautiful as the mixture of mountains and desert meet for a genuine feast for the eyes.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
After hiking the trails, we climbed the north steps up to the amphitheater. For those who have never done this, it is quite a climb... being acclimated to sea-level, it makes breathing quite hard at this altitude. I did fine though... until I made the climb a second time... then the altitude sickness kicked in. My head was pounding, my lungs were screaming, and my stomach was queasy. </div>
<div>
Things were better after I hydrated myself and snacked on a little salty food.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>

</tbody></table>
<div>
After the Red Rocks/Dakota Ridge hike, we went back to the hotel where wine and hot tubs were on the agenda for the rest of the evening. Come morning, we would be heading out toward the big mountains for a trip to see some friends staying in Silverthorne.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
On the road from Denver to the mountains, I witnessed the beauty of the area. My girlfriend was gracious enough to drive so I could take in the sights and wonders of the Colorado landscape.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We stopped in Breckenridge for a bite to eat and then headed on to Copper Mountain to meet up with some friends on the slopes. We partied down on Friday night and then set out in a chilly 12 degrees Saturday morning for the 2 day drive back to Corpus Christi.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It was an amazing trip... full of adventure, hiking, and family gathering that will reside in my memory for the rest of my life. I am truly blessed to live the life that I do and to share it with the great people around me!<br />
<br />
With all the potential for Hiking, rafting, mountain biking, climbing, skiing, and more... I really REALLY want to get back here soon!</div>

<h3>
Destination: Colorado... Epic Adventure Awaits</h3>
<div>
So my girlfriend, my son, and I have decided to take a little road trip for the Thanksgiving holiday. Our destination... Colorado.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My girlfriend has family there and badly wants to see them, and being adventurers as we are, we decided it would be great to take a little road trip. Little is an ambiguous term as it is about 1100 miles one way.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Aside from seeing her family, we look forward to hiking, skiing, and mountain biking, as well as other potential adventures in and around the Denver area. Not to mention, the adventure of the road trip itself. I am particularly looking forward to hiking and/or biking the Red Rocks/Dakota Ridge area. Living in Corpus Christi at sea level, there is no real way to prepare for the possibility of altitude sickness, so all safety precautions will be in place and we will save the strenuous stuff toward the end of the trip.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We depart Corpus Christi on Saturday November 23 and plan to return on Sunday December 1... I will try to provide updates as we go, but will definitely have a recap of the adventure when we are done.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Happy Turkey Day Everyone!!!</div>

<h3>
Expedition: Laguna Madre - Update</h3>
<div>
In our <a href="http://humanspiritofadventure.blogspot.com/2013/09/expedition-laguna-madre.html" target="_blank">previous post</a> we gave a few more details about the upcoming kayaking expedition in which HSA could be involved. We now have a few more (See flyer below).</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This event is in dire need of a "Title Sponsor" as well as other sponsors if it is to get off the ground. As previously mentioned, it is a paddle for charity. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
That charity is the Volunteer Services Council for the Corpus Christi State Supported Living Center. This charity is in support of people with intellectual disabilities such as autism, Downs Syndrome, and other mental health issues. For over 40 years, the VSC has been improving the lives of those who reside at the Living Center (formerly known as Corpus Christi State School). </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The monies from this charity go to various things for those with the disabilities like purchasing Christmas presents, trips to the local fishing pier, and trips to the movies... as well as countless other things.</div>
<div>
